Each livraison generally contains nine plates illustrating furnishings from three types of collections, i.e. "sièges" (seat furniture), "meubles" (case furniture), and "tentures" (bed and window hangings). The publication was also issued by subscription, and subscribers could choose whether to receive the plates from all three types of collections, or only those parts they were interested in owning
Description based on: livr. 23, no. 57-59, 120-125; title-page wanting. Publication information taken from the running captions on the plates
Publisher varies, sometimes appearing as "D. Guilmard et Bordeaux," "D. Guilmard et Bordeaux Frères," or, during the late nineteenth century, as "E. Maincent."
For more information on the publication history of this periodical, see the introduction to the online version of Le garde meuble written by Cynthia Van Allen Schaffner, on the Smithsonian Institution Libraries website
The plates for the "meubles" and "tentures" series generally include the scale in mêtres
Guilmard illustrated many of the plates. Lithographers include A. Cuvillier and A. Raze. The plates were printed by various firms, including: Rigo Frères; J. Rigo et cie; J. Rigo Lebref et cie; Decan et Lebref; and Decan
The plates issued in livr. 67 and 68 feature furnishings by Jeanselme, Bordeaux, Descartes, Richtaedt, Quignon, and Bertaud displayed at the Exposition nationale des produits de l'industrie agricole et manufacturière in Paris in 1849
CHMRB copy has livr. 23-74 (1841-1851), including furniture plates no. 120-no. 431, and tentures (window and bed draperies) plates no. 57-no. 212. Plates livr. 53, no. 306 and livr. 56, no. 318 are wanting. Some of the plates are bound out of order
CHMRB copy has been bound together subsequent to publication into three volumes. Volume 1 contains livr. 23-livr. 40; v. 2. contains livr. 41-58; and v. 3 contains livr. 59-74. A finding aid providing the livraison and plate numbers contained in this copy is available from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum Library
CHMRB copy has the stamp of a former owner: "This is the property of Jane Smith Inc."
CHMRB copy has modern burgundy cloth bindings with printed paper spine labels. Some of the plates have closely cropped edges, affecting some of the captions, etc. The tightness of the bindings sometimes obscures the plate numbers in the gutter margin. The original covers have been preserved in a separate box following conservation treatment
